Its worth looking at the method used by Alec Jordan at Jordan Boats for aligning two part planks when glueing. As part of his kits he drills small holes at each end of the plank with a common hole on the scarf joint. When glueing the scarf these three holes can then be lined up using panel pins and a thin line a thin line. A simple and elegant solution to the problem which gives very accurate results. <br />Regards Graham. Personally I found the idea of scarfing a bit daunting and was tempted by the kits. The idea of lofting plans and cutting etc as a newbie feels fraught with potential to mess the whole thing up and not know it until after a significant investment of time and money. In the end i decided i was going to give it a go without a kit and used a flush cut router bit so i knew that even if the lofting wasnt quite accurate (it wasn't) the planks would at least be identical. I joined the planks with a butt joint and glassed both sides but "dished" out a hollow on the outside surface so I could sand the area flush (I got that idea from a book quoting a guy called 'dynamite' something). It was a lot of work getting it flush. Next time i can see the merits of scarping. Am working myself up to building a phonenix iii - for that the daunting piece is making masts, rigging etc.. All good fun. Thanks for your posts here it lets an IT guy in a windowless office daydream for a while.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
