If the boom of the mainsail is aft enough to overlap the mizzen's boom, then won't they collide when swinging through the ship?

I am planning on a small fishing sailer with a similar rig. The mizzen will not be used while trolling and I will use the mast as a center rigger of sorts. The balanced lug coming down so easy and leaving a clean mast seems perfect, but if I fly both sails coming home, I'm certain I'll need to tack several times.

Thank you again.

Ron JonesRon Joneshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08153521498006591272noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8638765920957629245.post-35362034890166854142012-08-03T04:37:48.969+10:002012-08-03T04:37:48.969+10:00A very good technical evaluation, Ross. In contrast to your rig, I do not lace the boom to the mast and find that on the occasion the boom drifts to leeward, it is for good reason and the sail keeps it's shape beautifully despite hanging out there on it's own. This was hard to get used to - couldn't overcome the feeling something was terribly wrong!

I run my downhaul from the forward end of the boom which acts as both your downhaul and parrel in one and have been rewarded with a simple, easy rig to adjust. There is a lot of pressure on that one piece of tackle however and once, when it worked it's way loose (sloppy skipper) it was a near disaster as the sail dipped, flogged and jibed like a wild thing.

michaeldorymanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16077373149267825091noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8638765920957629245.post-25881944041416829912012-08-01T21:55:55.857+10:002012-08-01T21:55:55.857+10:00Thanks for the comment, Ian. This is because the luff of a well-cut balance lugsail is not troubled by turbulence off the mast.

As for the proportions of the new sail, it really depends on a number of variables and needs to be looked at as an entity. If you want to send me an email with a sail plan drawing of your existing boat, I'll give you an opinion.

Ross LillistoneRoss Lillistonehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04365414347565560334noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8638765920957629245.post-56638826088798338392012-08-01T19:33:34.186+10:002012-08-01T19:33:34.186+10:00An inspiring article Ross. I've been pondering for about 3 years how best to increase the sail area on my little 8 foot pram with standing lug (on the same mast), and now the penny has dropped. A longer yard and boom, and a balance lugsail.
Would you suggest an equal addition forward of the mast and on the leach - in area or in width?
Ianmomisthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13241178158115432815noreply@blogger.com
